It's 2012 all over again...

A new documentary film is on its way, one that harkens back to the old claim that the ancient Mayans were in contact with UFO occupants.  Apparently, this film has the blessing of the Mexican government.
The doc's called Revelations of the Mayans 2012 And Beyond.  It's not a new idea.  The concept of "ancient astronauts" begins at least with Von Daniken, the idea that UFOs landed in BC times and built the pyramids of Egypt and the lines of Nazca.  What's different here, supposedly, is that director Raul Julia-Levy (son of the late actor, Raul Julia) claims to have solid evidence to substantiate contact between Mayans and extraterrestrials.  What's more, officials of the Mexican government have issued a release testifying to that statement.  The release comes from the Mexican ministry of tourism.  That should probably tell you all that you need to know.

Said official speaks of "landing pads in the jungle" that date back nearly 3,000 years.  Though why, as the above linked article correctly points out, a "landing pad" is needed for extraterrestrial spacecraft defies understanding in light of most UFO reports and the capabilities of the craft described therein.

Those involved with the film vehemently deny that this is any sort of attempt to cash in on the Mayan/2012/end of the world hype that has surfaced in recent years.  But what are they going to say?  In the end, the claims contained in this documentary will likely fall to the wayside as so many other so-called "prophetic" claims have...damaging the credibility of Ufology in the process.

What these "ancient astronaut theorists," as they proudly proclaim themselves as on History Channel shows and such, neglect to take into consideration is that humans today are inherently no smarter than ancient peoples such as the Mayans were.  We might have more knowledge but we are not more intelligent.  There is a difference.  The Mayans were perfectly capable of formulating acts of mathematics, architecture, engineering, and language without the outside assistance of aliens.  In fact, such conjecture is really rather insulting to the human mind when you think about it.

While I should probably approach this upcoming documentary with an open mind, it will be difficult to do so.  The evidence just isn't there for many of these sorts of claims.
